The Augusta Sports Council announced Wednesday that JMU senior punter Harry O’Kelly had been named to the FCS Punter of the Year shortlist for the upcoming season. There are 22 total players named to the list, including one other CAA player: Villanova junior kicker/punter Nathan Fondacaro.
This is the second consecutive year O’Kelly found himself on the preseason watch list. In 2019, the Australian averaged 38.4 yards per attempt, had three punts go for over 50 yards and landed 21 attempts inside the 20-yard line.
O’Kelly broke out his freshman season in 2017 after converting multiple fake punts for first down, including a 30-yard scamper against New Hampshire and a 24-yard run against North Dakota State in the 2017 FCS National Championship. He currently ranks seventh all-time in JMU program history in career punt average with 39.6 yards per attempt.
