JMU football head coach Curt Cignetti announces the 2020 signing class.

On Thursday, Kevin Warner, JMU assistant athletics director for communications, announced JMU will pause all football conditioning activities following five positive COVID-19 test results. Four of the five cases are asymptomatic, and one is symptomatic but presumed positive.

The five positive cases are all new since Friday. As a result of contact tracing, 25 additional players are in quarantine, and one student-athlete not on the football team has tested positive but is asymptomatic.

From July 1 to Aug. 21, JMU conducted 511 tests on athletes. Three came back positive, but each player was asymptomatic. That was the last update before the NCAA postponed fall sports championships.

Football is the only sport that has paused practices at this time. Warner said the earliest the Dukes can return is Sept. 7.
