Starting Tuesday, a section of Westmoreland Drive — located off Port Republic Road — will temporarily close due to a waterline project.
Westmoreland drive is expected to be closed for five weeks, according to a news release. Due to the project, the westbound lanes of Port Republic will also be closed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the early phases of the project. Michael Parks, Harrisonburg’s director of communications, said that the two westbound lanes will be closed for three days if “all goes well.” During this time, westbound traffic will flow in one lane.
Parks said the waterline is being replaced because it’s “reached the end of its life.” The water line will be installed under the roadway, causing the closure. The city of Harrisonburg said it will accommodate travel for residents affected by construction during the project.
Drivers will be able to use Nelson Drive and Edgewood Drive as a detour.
