Teofilo Serrano Torres was charged with first-degree murder on Sunday morning. 

Following a fatal stabbing Saturday night, the Harrisonburg Police Department arrested 35-year-old Teofilo Serrano Torres in connection to the incident that occurred at the 200 block of Community Street. 

According to a press release from the HPD, Torres was charged with first-degree murder after an investigation was carried out by HPD officers and investigators. The victim, Juan Velazquez Ruiz, 34, was found lying unresponsive in a yard with multiple stab wounds when officers arrived at the scene. 

“This morning 35-year-old Teofilo Serrano Torres was apprehended without incident in Harrisonburg and charged with [first-]degree murder,” Interim Police Chief Gabriel Camacho said yesterday. 

The HPD urged anyone with additional information about the stabbing on Community Street to contact HPD’s Major Crimes Unit at (540) 437-2640.
