Talmage R. Cooley Bridge to be reconstructed

Past construction in Harrisonburg has lead to heavy traffic.

Repairs to the Talmage R. Cooley Bridge, which runs over Martin Luther King Jr. Way, will begin May 21. The city opened five bids for the project of repairing this bridge, according to the Daily News Record.

The city must complete these repairs by August 3. Harrisonburg Department of Public Works has given this project a fixed due date of 75 days to align with JMU being out of session, meaning less student traffic in Harrisonburg, the city’s website.

Maintenance of the bridge will include projects like recoating concrete, rail post replacement, joint sealant, sealer, anchor bolt replacement and sidewalk repairs. It also includes replacing transverse joints, replacing a rail post, toggle bolts and other items. Two approach sidewalks will also be replaced because of erosion behind the sidewalks.
