New chairpersons of Harrisonburg's school board open dialogue about the presence of School Resource Officers in the city's schools
The role of School Resource Officers was brought into question last summer amid the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests, with many in the community no longer feeling safe at having armed, uniformed police in schools across the city. However, this continued to remain nothing more than a discussion kicked around by the school board until the beginning of 2021 when a new set of chairpersons were selected. These included Kristen Loflin as the new chairwoman and Nick Swayne as the vice-chairman. Reporter Ian Welfley sat down with a few members of our city’s school board to get perspective on what we can expect from Harrisonburg’s schools in the coming months.
